Honey Bee

This is the first bee I painted. The canvas had become overworked and I felt stuck.

I chose yellow - unusual for me, as the dominant colour, because it is complimented by the blue underpainting. Suddenly, adding a glow like sunlight filtering through the hints of blue & green from the background, the piece became a thriving hive, with thick, dripping textures of honey cascading over everything.

I knew there had to be a lone bee busy at work, collecting the golden nectar for me. This feels rich and indulgent, capturing the essence of nature’s sweet, rhythmic labor, the endless dance of pollination, abundance, & life.

This piece is built through deliberate layering, controlled material application, and close attention to texture, surface tension, and visual balance. The work reflects an ongoing studio practice focused on physical process, emotional weight, and the quiet complexity that emerges through repetition and adjustment.
